"Samurai Practicing Budo with Enso" T-Shirt Fall 17
When I was eighteen I moved to Kyoto, Japan to practice martial arts with the masters. I soon learned that the techniques of Aikido and the techniques of painting and calligraphy have a lot in common. The Ki or energy in Aikido practice is invisible, but when you paint you can capture that essence. With this piece I am trying to capture some of the essence of aikido practice in the hand, feet, and body position. The En or Enso circle symbolizes enlightenment, strength, elegance, the entire universe and mu (voidness or lack of self existence.) Zen monks paint them as a meditation. I continue practicing and teaching meditation and martial arts to this day.
